What is Structured Workplace Learning?

Structured Workplace Learning is divided into three programs:

  1. Structured Workplace Learning

  2. School based Apprenticeships & Traineeships

Structured Workplace Learning Program

A new approach has been introduced across Victoria in 2016 to help secure structured workplace learning (SWL) for students undertaking vocational education and training (VET) programs as part of their senior secondary certificates.

Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs) will manage the SWL Program to facilitate access to SWL placements that link to the VET programs being undertaken by students as part of their VCE, VCAL studies or School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT). LLENs will not focus on work experience placements.

Building on their established partnerships with schools, industry groups and employers, LLENs will identify appropriate SWL placements that are tailored to local priorities and employment opportunities.

A new state-wide online portal is being established to provide teachers and students with a single, easy to navigate, information and referral point for a diverse range of SWL opportunities uploaded by employers.  The portal is expected to be launched in April 2016.

Resources on structured workplace learning and occupational health and safety are available on the Department’s website, see: Structured Workplace Learning Program - Teacher Resources

A new statewide portal is available for students, teachers and parents to assist with SWL Placements:

The Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) website www.workplacements.education.vic.gov.au has been established in conjunction with the Department of Education and Training.
